Friday began with a short meeting at an empty parking lot in
Murphy to get everyone organized. This also allowed time for Scott and
Jim to prepare the trail markers for the Rock Challenges. Many took alternate
routes so that they could watch the struggles, triumphs, and disasters
of the very wet and challenging course. It was overcast and scattered showers
were the rule throughout the day, making photography difficult.
Several rigs attempted the Rock Challenge, but few were successful (without
use of their winch!). Alan Soutter had a good run, as did several others.
Carnage to body panels was in abundance! A giant banner boasting of Ford's
participation in our Roundup was prominently displayed on one of the major
sections of the Rock Challenge. Even though the spectators were drenched
at times from the rain, many stayed and cheered on their local heroes!
Back home at the campground, the action continued as various ones tried
their hand at "The Ramp". Lou Levy was occupied with making emergency repairs
to the front axle that broke during the trail rides, probably the Rock
Challenge.
Bryan Brooks' air bag suspension
allowed him to almost max out the ramp. His score was an astounding 101.5"
of travel. (Ken Messer would be the contact person for the actual "score"
as he certainly knows more about this area than I do.) Jim Howell's one-quarter
elliptical rear springs gave him a travel up the ramp of 98".
