Saturday morning's photo shoot was planned for the field across
the highway from the campground, but the several days of rain had turned
the field into a mini-swamp, filled with soft ooze. The group photo opportunity
was wisely relocated to a vacant parking lot in Murphy. Over 100 Early
Broncos were on hand to have their pictures taken, along with several Big
Broncos, tow rigs, and other vehicles. Short organizational meetings were
held for drivers of the various categories of trail rides planned for the
day. The major obstacle for the hard core rock buggies was SlickRock!
SlickRock is a major section of sheer granite, made slick by a steady
stream of water flowing from the top right and down through the center
of the massive slab. This time, however, the rock was even slicker due
to the rains and the mud carried on the tires of previous challengers.
The trails to this point were particularly crowded and we had to make several
adjustments along the trail as we met other vehicles going in the wrong
:-) direction. Once we arrived at SlickRock, others ahead of us slowed
our progress. Rather than accept the limits of their inadequate machines,
many tried over and over again to gain the summit, only to finally relinquish
to the winch. Our Early Broncos not only beat the rock, but did so in style!
EB friend, Mike Ritchie's Jeep, did great! Lou Levy, my new ride for the
day (Hey, thanks, man!), also cleared the summit with no major effort!
As we were making our way out of the Tellico ORV, in order to get back
to the campground for the cookout and prizes, Alan Soutter indicated problems.
The frame had cracked at the trackbar attachment and the inside section
was also cracked. Thanks to Mike Ritchie's Premier Power Welder and on-board
air, speedy trailside repairs were affected. What a wonderful opportunity
to see it personally!
Well, we finally made it back to camp! We were starving and, fortunately
for us, some had already made it back to camp and had the Ford-funded burgers,
dogs, potato salad, chips, and drinks ready for us all! As soon as the
organizers could grab a bite of supper, the prizes were displayed. Brian
Keeler and others had secured many prizes -- Top Ten; Premium; and "Red
Ticket" prizes were plentiful.
Of particular note were those prizes that were of such value that Brian
had designated them as "The Top Ten Prizes". Brian has a list of the names
of the winners, but my task was to take their pictures!
:-) A fine time was had by all.
| We had a wonderful time and met lots of great folks. Our trip home
was uneventful and my 74 Bronco was quickly placed back into the body shop
for the completion of its restoration.
We are already making plans to return to Tellico next year and hope
you will join us! |
