WOW! What an off-road park you guys in south TX have available to you! Nothing like it that I have ever wheeled before!Adam Harris, editor of Bronco Driver magazine, and I arrived in Brady after 14 hours of travel and over 820 miles. After a restful night at Brady's Days Inn, we drove the 15 miles into Katemcy early Friday morning because we wanted to get unloaded and meet the LEBC list members that I had been talking with for over a year. The drive through the country side gave the impression that all we'd be wheeling in would be sand, scrub oaks, mesquite bushes, and clumps of cacti -- BOY! were we wrong. The terrain of the park with its pink granite outcroppings is extraordinary. Stephen Wright and Emily Funkhouser, new members of the Bama Gang and the ECBR, had tried to tell us how amazingly sticky the Katemcy rocks were ("like sandpaper", was their statement), but we had no idea how incredibly pleasant it was to put your tire on a rock and have it stay there while you tried to defy gravity until we actually got my rig out there on the Waterfall Trail.
The WATERFALL TRAIL
Shain Chapman and Randy Kruse, Katemcy Park owners, led our group and as we approached the " V " of the Waterfall, Shain asked me if I really wanted to put my rig through there or take the drive-around. I felt both informed and insulted LOL , but chose to follow Randy's lead as I maneuvered for the approach to the V notch. It was thrilling, even when I slipped off of the perfect line by not following Randy's spotting to the letter! A small reverse got me back on target and out of danger without too much damage. The exoskeleton and the rock sliders will need some buffing and some new spray paint, along with a couple of new rear reflectors.
BRONCO ALLEY
| Saturday, we followed Lee Novikoff on Bronco Alley. I was making very good progress getting up on the *BIG* rock at the entrance when Lee wanted me to position the left front tire in a better spot so that the right front tire did not have to climb a sheer rock face and take the possibility of breaking a front axle u-joint. We inched forward and then inched backwards about four times, then disaster struck. Even with Lee's excellent spotting and my truck's good manners and my highly developed driving skills LOL , I almost managed to put my rig on its top when it slid off the *BIG* rock at the entrance. | Lee jumped into action and gathered
several others to steady the truck and I got back into position and made
the maneuver, just like we had originally planned.
Piece of cake! Yeah, sure it was! I'm still
shaking from that experience.
Thanks to many, many good fellows on the tow strap, we kept the balance, got back on all fours and made it out of the entrance. Only five of our dozen or so rigs tried the "entrance". Yes, there's more to come on Bronco Alley! |

Walter Cox's report: "Saturday comes and we decide not to have a 5 level group but to have two level 4’s and I went with Lee’s led “Bronco Alley” group which had Lee (Novikoff), Doc Lewis & Adam (Harris) from Bronco Driver, Paul Miller, Jeff T. (Tonne), Greg S., Michael S. (Stricklan), & Chris T. (Towry). Now Chris’s family showed up the night before so I gave Suzy Duff a ride this time. Lee takes off through the first section of Bronco Alley which is quite tuff especially for stock wheelbase broncos. Doc Lewis is next and after a little winching we got him up on to the rock and into position. Now Chris & I have Tom (Allen) from PSC at the bottom of the hill and we are into a pretty good discussion about hydraulic cylinders and such when the roar of all of the spectators or should I say shrill. We look up and see Doc no longer in a good position, but rolling off of the big rock. I still don’t know what kept him from not landing on his roof. Everyone gets him back on all fours and we get through Bronco Alley almost until the last obstacle things go a little awry. I'm in another deep conversation with Suzy Duff about buying some radiators from them some time ago and such when we go down the last ledge. I had forgotten to put my seatbelt back on and luckily she had put hers on. My back end decided to flip us off of the rock and the only thing from keeping me from leaving my vehicle was the side bar and steering wheel. Right after that Michael's steering box shaft decided to go so we had to leave his rig there for repair." Walter Cox, Treasurer of LEBC, 4-23-2007.
