Roadster Prototype - July, 1964

Here are some pictures from Ford of the Bronco idea taken about July 14, 1964. The Bronco was introduced to the public in August, 1965, as a 1966 model year vehicle to compete against Jeep's CJ-5 and International Harvester's Scout in the burgeoning recreational four wheel drive vehicle market. The first Broncos were very spartan without options such as power steering and an automatic transmission.

This is the front view of the "roadster" prototype, #5-7608-2*. See also the rear view of the "wagon" prototype, #5-7608-6*.

Notice:  1) chrome bezels around headlights,
2) no side markers front or rear,
3) different grill design, and
4) roof rack. (Unofficial thoughts by Early Bronco enthusiast.)

Appreciation to the Lonestar Early Bronco Club for the pictures, however the thoughts are my own.) (*Unsure as to one prototype with different doors - wagon & roadster?) (Appreciation to Todd J. Zuercher for the Bronco history article.)      BLewis     revised 4-1-01
