How well do you know your backyard birds?  This WebQuest will help you identify common songbirds.  You will enjoy recognizing the difference between various bird species as you play interactive games and participate in various activities.

The Tasks:

This WebQuest is designed for students studying life science.  You will:

The Resources:

1.  Come in and take a virtual walk around the Emporium.  This wonderful site includes some common bird songs.  All birds communicate with their voice. Different birds can distinguish between various bird calls.

2.  Bird Printouts allow you to view and identify songbirds using colorful details.  Overall bird images will help you look at each bird.  This site was chosen to help you properly identify bird species.

3.  This site contains some wonderful tips that will help you identify various birds. You will find helpful tips like how to recognize immature birds, adult male and female birds, and similar species of birds.

4.  This site will allow you to correctly match backyard birds to their names and photos.  Birds can be identified by various color markings.

5.  This site will allow you to find common backyard birds in a word search puzzle which may be printed.  You can find birds everywhere on the page.  This can be used as a fun activity for all bird lovers.

6.  For those interested in a far more detailed list, a Dictionary of Birds by Bruce Campbell and Elizabeth Lack is a great source.  You will find a very detailed list of bird terminology which may be helpful for those of you who are serious bird watchers.

7.  This site lists the birds that have been added to the Virtual Field Guide of Birds.   You can locate the scientific names of your favorite bird.  This is a helpful tool for teachers, parents, and students who wish to study the classifications of birds.

The Process:

1.  Come in and take a virtual walk around the Emporium.  This wonderful site includes some common bird songs.  All birds communicate with their songs. Listen to the bird songs and observe the photos.  Click on "more songs" to hear additional recordings.

2.  Bird Printouts allow you to view and identify songbirds using coloration details.  Overall bird images will help you look at each bird.  This site was chosen to help you properly identify bird species by color.  Select 5 of your favorite bird species and print them out.  You will need colored pencils or crayons to color each printout.

3.  This site contains some wonderful tips that will help you identify various birds. You will find helpful tips like how to recognize immature birds, adult male and female birds, and similar species of birds.  Read the materials to gain more knowledge about your favorite bird.

4.  This site will allow you to correctly match backyard birds to their names and photos.  Click on the bird name that you think matches the above photo.  Check your score at the end to see how well you knew each bird.

5.  This site will allow you to find common backyard birds in a word search puzzle which may be printed.  You can find birds everywhere on the page.  Find the terms in the word search that are listed at the bottom of the page.  Words can appear horizontally, vertically, diagonally; forwards or backwards.  Press "Answers" to see where all the terms are hidden.

6.  For those interested in a far more detailed list, a Dictionary of Birds by Bruce Campbell and Elizabeth Lack is a great source.  Read a very detailed list of bird terminology which may be helpful for those of you who are serious bird watchers.

7.  This site lists the birds that have been added to the Virtual Field Guide of Birds.  You can locate the scientific names of your favorite birds.  Click on the links that have the first letter of the bird species you are investigating.  Next, click on the scientific or common name of the bird of your choice.  After reading the fact sheet, you can click on "photo", "song", or "map CBC range" to gain more information.  This is a helpful site for teachers, parents, and students who wish to study the classification of birds.
