Coordinate Plane

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of graphing on a coordinate plane.  After reviewing integers, students will visually and concretely draw horizontal and vertical number lines.  Students will practice and become familiar with plotting points and labeling points on a coordinate grid.  Students will learn key terms associated with coordinate plane.

The Task

The students will:

Resources

1.  What is a coordinate plane?  This site will offer a glossary.  The students will define terms associated with coordinate plane.

2.  This site will offer a tutorial on coordinate plane.  Need additional assistance?

3.  This site will offer class discussions on coordinate plane.  Let's get acquainted.

4.  This site will offer opportunities to label and locate points on a coordinate plane.  Let's play games.

5.  This site will quiz you on labeling points on a coordinate plane.  Apply what you know!

The Process

Each student will:

1.  Use the glossary to define coordinate plane, x-axis, y-axis, quadrant, origin, ordered pair, x-coordinate, and y-coordinate.

2.  Match the definitions with actual parts of a coordinate plane with the use of a tutorial on coordinate plane.

3.  Read and follow the discussions on coordinate plane.

4.  Try to label and locate points with the Coordinates Game.

5.  Match the coordinate points on the coordinate plane from a quiz.

Learning Advice

You should write the definitions and keep them in your math folder.  You will need graphing paper to draw and label parts to the coordinate plane.  Write a synopsis of how you would begin to locate any point on a coordinate plane.  As you go through this activity, write down any questions you have concerning coordinate graphing.

Conclusion

After completing these exercises, the students will be able to draw, label and identify parts of a coordinate plane, plot and label points on a coordinate plane, and locate points on a coordinate plane.
