Germs Make You Squirm
Have you ever wondered why grown-ups keep telling you to wash your
hands before you eat or after you use the restroom? It's because
germs make you squirm! They will do anything to invade your body
and make you sick. Germs aren't all bad, though. In this WebQuest,
we'll learn about good germs too! We'll also explore ways to defend
ourselves against these pesky little critters.

1. Look Out for Germs! Let's learn about germ invasion and find out if there's a cure. Let's look at the germ army and our weapons against germs.2. Bacteria In the Cafeteria! In this site, we will learn about the good germs and the bad germs. Information on bacteria is available to help answer the question, "Do these bacteria help people?"
3. A Million Microbes On Your Hands? This site will tell you why handwashing is important. It will tell you when you need to wash your hands. You can even test your handwashing know-how!
4. Detective Henry's Secret Code Game. Detective Henry helps solve invasion cases. In this site, you can complete some sentences about germs by solving the secret codes!
5. Splash! Have you ever wondered why you have to wash your hands when they're not even dirty? In this story, little Louis and Lenny the cat will tell you.
1. Look Out for Germs!
Follow the instructions below. When you get to the bottom of a screen, just click on the blue arrow to move to the next screen.
A. Read "Lookout for Germs".
B. Read "You've Got Germs".
C. Read "Who's Had the Flu?". Write down the name of the special medicines that doctors use to prevent people from getting the flu.
D. Read "Germ Invasion". Write down the name of your body's soldier that tries to fight these germy invaders.
E. Read "Is There a Cure?". Is there a cure for infections caused by bacteria? What about infections caused by viruses?
F. Read "The Germ Army". Write down some ways that these sneaky germs can get inside your body.
G. Read "Weapons Against Germs". List three weapons.
H. Read "Smart Germs". Write down one way that germs become smart.
I. Read "Who Makes the Weapons?".
J. Read "Making New Medicines".
K. Read "Inventing a New Medicine".
L. Read "Germ Tips". List five tips.2. Bacteria In the Cafeteria! Visit the school cafeteria. Click on the stars in the cafeteria. Answer the yes or no questions. After finding all of the stars, solve the microbe riddle.

A. In this site, first click on "Why Is Handwashing Important?" and list three reasons that handwashing is important.
B. Second, click on "When To Wash". List two reasons when you should wash your hands "before" you do something. List two reasons when you should wash your hands "after" you do something.
C. Click on "Test Your Handwashing Know-How" to see how well you remember these handwashing tips.4. Detective Henry's Secret Code Game. To solve Detective Henry's secret code, match the secret code letters under each white box to the actual letters at the top of your screen. Click on the "Check Answers" box to see how you did.
5. Splash! Pay close attention to what little Louis and Lenny the cat tell you about washing your hands. Write a couple of sentences explaining why washing your hands is important.
6. Germ Jumble. Complete the sentences about germs by unscrambling the jumbled up word. Some of the information you have learned in the previous tasks will help you.
