Upon completion of this exercise, you will:
The
Resources:
Five unique places on the Internet that will assist the learner in accomplishing the above mentioned tasks are listed below. Links are embedded below so that the learner will know in advance what they are clicking on.
1. There is a new and exciting way of multiplying called Lattice Multiplication. Realizing that this may be a new term to some, this is the Best Site for Defining the term lattice.2. The lattice form of multiplication dates back years ago. It is interesting to know where it gets its name. Ask Dr. Math some history of lattice multiplication and the lattice method of problem solving.
3. How Do You Do It shows how to make the grid used for lattice multiplication. It offers procedures for solving different types of multiplication problems particularly a 2 by 2 lattice.
4. With the lattice form, students will create and solve various problems. This method can be used for any multi-digit multiplication problem. The Solution can assist with lining up digits in the proper place value before adding the sub products to find the correct answers.
5. The Lattice method of multiplication appears in the first printed arithmetic book, printed in Treviso in 1478. It shows this exact method as well as some variations of the long multiplication algorithm commonly taught today.
6. Now that you see that there is more than one way of multiplying and you have learned that New Way, tell me which way you prefer.
The
Process:
1. This is the Best Site for Defining the term lattice. Define the term lattice. State what the lattice process does for numbers.2. Ask Dr. Math when dose the lattice form of multiplication date back to and where it gets its name. Also ask the three steps in multiplication.
3. How Do You Do IT offers procedures for solving a 2 by 2 lattice. Briefly list the procedures and solve the following problem for practice. 25*15.
4. The Solution can assist with lining up digits in the proper place value before adding the sub products to find the correct answer. Click on The Solution and write the multiplicand and the multiplier in the problem. Tell what the diagonal slashes do to each box.
5. The Lattice method of multiplication appears in the first printed arithmetic book, printed in Treviso in 1478. It was introduced into Europe by Fibonacci. Find Fibonacci correct name and tell what multiplication was often done with and why.
6. Now that you have learned a New Way of multiplying, complete the multiplication quiz. Complete the quiz using the new and exciting lattice multiplication method and tell me which method you prefer.
Learning
Advice:
After working through the activities on this webquest,
students will have learned a new way of multiplying or will have a better
understanding of the lattice method. Let me encourage you to refer back
to the resources provided above on lattice multiplication.
