Have you ever asked yourself, "How often do I apply basic math concepts to my daily life?"

This web page is to help motivate and prepare students to accept their role in a changing world.  It can be accomplished by presenting math as a life long learning experience. This page is designed to introduce students to some of the daily activities of life that involve math concepts.  Students will be introduced to problem solving, cooperative learning strategies, and varied performance tasks in order to allow them to respond to and experience a variety of learning environments.

The Task:

Visit Martin's Kid's Club to learn all about how math is applied to our daily functioning of life.   Play lots of fun and exciting counting games and learn the proper way of writing, balancing and making out a deposit slip.  This web site contains a variety of activities that are useful in the following areas:

2. How to Shop on a Budget?   This page gives you shopping instructions on how to get the most for your shopping dollar.

3. How to Write a Check?  Phelps County Bank provides eight essential steps to writing a check.

4. Employment First (University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension) offers an eight step process of How to Balance Your Checkbook.    The Business Money and Guide also provide a tutorial website that contains steps to Learn2 Balance Your Checkbook.

5. How to Fill out a Deposit Slip?  Wilmington Trust Bank provides vital information to help students learn the steps in filling out a deposit slip.

The Process:

    Testing Your Math Skills for Life...
  1. Click here to test your skills in counting money.   If you need help, check the value of money.
  2. Make a shopping list for household items not exceeding a budget of $75.00. Go to Shopping on a Budget Level 1 for instructions.
  3. Write a check to Union Planter's Bank for a car payment of $350.00.  Review the eight essentials to Writing a Check.
  4. Balance your check book.  Start with a balance of $900.00 and make two withdraws (one for $150.00 and one for $60.00).  Review the Employment First (University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension) eight step process of How to Balance Your Checkbook and the Business Money and Guide's tutorial website's steps to Learn2 Balance Your Checkbook.  What is your ending balance?
  5. Fill out a deposit slip for $300.00. ($200.00 cash and $100.00 in checks).  Please review How to Fill Out a Deposit Slip.
