Introduction:

Welcome to the land of synonyms! Students are you tired of using the same words everyday? This webquest is just the place for you.  This webquest will give you the power to increase your vocabulary. Once you have explored the land of synonyms you are going to be able to add spice to you compositions.  Get ready to explore!

The Tasks:

Identify synonyms
Use context clues to figure out the meanings of words
Identify synonyms to add to vocabulary list
Use synonyms correctly in a sentence

The Process:

Here are some exciting website that will help you complete this tasks. These wsbsites will help you find words with similar meanings.
1. Welcome! Synonyms are words that have similar meanings.  Before we explore the world of synonyms look up the followings five words at Thesarus.com to find a synonym for each word: fast, small, make, look, and smart.  You will need a pencil and paper to write your answers.  Turn in your answer to the teacher for evaluation.  Now lets visit the land of matching synonyms.  This is a fun way to explore synonyms.  You must first read the directions. Click on the pictures to start. Have fun!

2. Wow! You have landed in the land of concentration.   In order to do this activity you must concentrate.  This activity going to help boost your vocabulary.  You must click on the pictures until you find a pair of synonyms.  This is a great way to practice your knowledge of synonyms.  This activity will give you many chance to find pairs of synonyms.

3. Now that you have practice with synonyms, lets explore a activity that will score your knowledge.  This activity will give you a chance to grade yourself on synonyms.  Read the Instructions!  Click on the down arrow in the box to find the correct synonym.  When you have complete this activity print out your score.  Turn in your score to your teacher.

4. Puzzle Time!  Are you ready to explore the land of synonym?  In this activity you will have to read the clues to find the correct words to complete the puzzle.  You have several words in this activity that you have to fill in the boxes with the correct synonym.  Hints! If you need help click hints.  Go Explore!  Remember to print out your puzzle and give it to your teacher.

5. Quiz Time!  This quiz will give you a chance to test your knowledge of synonyms.  This site provides a five question quiz.  Complete the quiz to receive your score.  Print out your quiz and bring it to class.

Teacher Advice:

This lesson is geared for third grade reading and language arts.  This lesson is designed to help students to become more familiar with synonyms.  This lesson can also be used as a review for fourth graders.

In order for students to independently explore this webquest, they will need to be on a third grade reading level.   If students are not, then the teacher or another student will have to assist them.

Students will need background knowledge of synonyms.

This teacher will need to have basic computer knowledge and internet navigation skills to do this lesson.

This lesson can be used in the computer lab or in the classroom.
