Clocks  . . .  Telling Time

This Web Quest will explore the concept of time and the measurement of time. Children will practice reading time to the hour and half-hour. They will also place times in the appropriate sequence.


 

The Tasks:


At the end of  the activities you will be able to:

  use clocks to tell time by the hour,
  use clocks to tell time by the half-hour,
  use clocks to identify where the hour hand is placed at a specified time,
  use clocks to identify where the minute hand is placed at a specified time,
  use clocks to sequence the hours of the day, and
  read clock times written as words and as numbers.
 


 
 

The Resources:
 

 1. Have fun watching the hands on the clock move. Time Flies  as you set the clock to each new hour. Alfy will also display the new time shown on a digital watch.
 

2. "Kid Klok" will let you select the hour and minutes you want the clock to read.  Watching the placement of the hour and minute hands will enable you to read time more quickly.

3. What Time Is It? Now that you can read a clock by the hour and half hour, you are able to put the times in the correct order  Just sequence the times in number order.

4.. Send Flinch on his errands at Clock Block. It will be a fun challenge to read Flinch's schedule and match the clock time to the errand location.

5. Know you are ready to test your knowledge of telling time by the hour at Just In Time Quiz 1. Test your skill at telling time by the half-hour at Quiz 2. Good luck taking the quizzes.

6. Concentrating on Time  is a fun game of cards. This matching card game was created by your teacher to give you practice reading time.
 


 
 

The Process:

1. Have fun watching the hands on the clock move. Time Flies  as you set the clock to each new hour. You will also see the new time shown on a digital watch.  To watch an hour go by click on and hold down the minute hand (the red and longest hand) making it turn to the right and watching it pass by the numbers until it returns back to twelve. See the new hour displayed on both the digital and analog watch. View all the hours on the clock.

2. "Kid Klok"  will let you select the hour and minutes you want the clock to read. Watching the placement of the hour and minute hands will enable you to read time more quickly. Begin by clicking the first arrow at the hour box. Slide down to the number 1. The second and third boxes are the minutes. First view :00  minutes. Click the gray Show this time box to view One o'clock (l:00). To view a half hour later change the minutes to read :30 to see One thirty (l:30) shown. Now view the rest of the first box numbers by hour and half hour.

3.  What Time Is It? Now that you can read a clock by the hour and half hour, you are able to put the times in the correct order.  Just sequence the times in number order. Choose the hour number that comes first when you count. Click on the chosen clock and drag it to the number 1. Now do the same for number 2, 3, and 4. When all four clocks are in order click the arrow pointing to the right for your next practice.

4.  Send Flinch on his errands at Clock Block. Choose the number 1. When the play button is flashing green it is time to click on play. Select the pink new game box.  Read the first line of Flinch's schedule, then click and drag the clock that shows that time moving it to the location. Continue until all of his scheduled errands are completely matched with their clocks. Then click go and watch Flinch run his errands.

5. Know you are ready to test your knowledge of telling time by the hour at Just In Time Quiz 1. Test your skill at telling time by the half-hour at Quiz 2.  Good luck taking the quizzes. Follow the directions at  the top of the worksheet pages. Don't forget to click the Get Score button when the the quiz is finished.

When the game appears, try to discover all the matching pairs of time. After all matches have been made, click the blue rectangle that says New Game. Have Fun!
 
 

Learning Advice:

Clocks  . . .  Telling Time is filled with web sites that give young children opportunities to identify the hour and minute hands on clocks. This Web Quest will provide students with a better understanding of the relationship between times written and displayed on a clock. The Time Quizzes will test students ability to tell time.

 

Conclusion:

Good job! You have shown you can make and read times.  This Web Quest proves you are ready to have your own watch. Use what you have learned to keep the class on their posted special area schedule.
