Many functions follow the "basic" pattern, but if you wish Excel to make some sort of decision before it calculates the value in a cell, you need to provide it with some more information.

One of these more complex functions is the IF FUNCTION.  The "pattern" of the IF function is as follows.

All IF functions have THREE parts:  The test (where you ask Excel to make a decision), the result if the test is TRUE, and the result if the test is FALSE.

In the example above, Excel is being asked to check cell "B7" to see if it is greater than 50.  If it IS, then insert the word "Bonus", otherwise, insert the words "No bonus"
